The results of a meta-analysis, which were published on June 28, 2010 in the journal of BMC Medicine, have confirmed that consumption of dark chocolate might have a beneficial effect on blood pressure.

Dr. Karen Ried and his associates at the University of Adelaide in Australia have analyzed the results of 13 studies on the effects of chocolate flavonols on blood pressure. “The flavonols have the ability to increase the formation of the endothelial nitric oxide, which promotes vasodilation and thus lowers blood pressure” said Dr. Ried. An analysis of all these studies against placebo found that participants who ate dark chocolate for at least two weeks had received a lower pressure. Participants whose blood was normal saw no change. The study authors note that this compares to other dietary supplements used to control the pressure, that is to say they have an effect in reducing blood pressure in people who have hypertension but do not affect people whose pressure is normal.
